Welcome to Family Outreach Center!

Client Story

Two years ago, before coming to Family Outreach Center, I was suicidal and depressed, having been a survivor, since the age of 8, of life long years of emotional, physical, verbal and sexual abuse. In addition, the severe domestic violence I had experienced in each of my three former partner relationships had destroyed not only my self-esteem but also my hope for any kind of a positive future for myself and my two small boys. Upon referral to Family Outreach Center, I had no income, no car, no safe dwelling, no beds or needed furniture, and no way to pay for needed food or bills. I had only two years of early childhood formal education though I was bright and longed to learn. I had no dependable or safe support network of friends, family or church to help guide or encourage me and my English skills and fluency were very poor
.

Family OUTREACH Center changed all that. Due to their genuine concern for people and their diversified programs and multi-faceted, wide ranging client services of counseling, advocacy, case facilitation and community resource awareness, I now have a dependable, decent job, an affordable, safe apartment with the necessary furnishings, a car, driver's license and sufficient income to cover my monthly food and bills. My legal issues of custody and child support are now resolved and I have been guided to opportunities for learning English and even getting my GED. In addition I also am participating in excellent, culturally sensitive counseling sessions that have been helping me over the last two years to heal my wounded heart and memories as well as resolve my personal issues and obstacles in a wholesome, effective way. Thanks to Family Outreach Center, I and my boys now have restored hope for a positive future and we are beginning to be happy participants in life instead of becoming only a sad, hopeless statistic in the welfare system.

Thanks Family Outreach Center,
Shena

Family OUTREACH Center has worked to bridge the gap in the human services community for those segments of the population who traditionally represent the underserved and disenfranchised in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Kent County, since its incorporation as a private, non-profit agency in 1979. The agency provides counseling and support services to children, youth, adults, and families with needs in the areas of mental health, family intervention, prevention and education, and substance abuse assessment and treatment.

Our Mission
Leading the way in promoting healthy family living by reaching out to underserved populations and those who are of low income in our community.

Staff Diversity
Family Outreach Center is committed to maintaining a culturally diverse and experienced staff. This goal is achieved through our agency's extensive recruitment efforts, through offering internal opportunities for advancement and through program expansion.

Program Services

Outpatient Mental Health Services
Outpatient counseling and group services are provided to address the mental health, substance abuse treatment, relapse prevention and anger management needs of children, youth adults, and families.

Jail Mental Health and Diversion Services
Screening, assessment, and crisis intervention services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the inmates at the Kent County Jail. A variety of support services are offered to inmates returning to the community to support them in the re-entry process.

Child & Family Services
Home Based/Family Case Management intensive in-home therapy, in both English and Spanish, is offered to children ages 5-17 with severe emotional and behavioral problems due to their condition and related family problems. The child identified and his/her immediate family are provided with counseling and a variety of support and extended services in order to reduce the symptoms and stabilize their living environment.

School Based Outreach
Outreach counseling and group services are provided to at risk school aged children attending the Grand Rapids Public Schools and several surrounding suburban school districts and their families. The goal of this early intervention program is to assess and refer children identified who have been identified as having behavioral health needs and then refer them community-based support services.
Family & Community Compact/Kindship Program
Families, extended families, fictive kin and community networks are given the opportunity to be involved in the planning and provision of care for children who are in need of out-of-home placement due to child abuse and/or neglect. Safe stable placements of children are made, resulting in a diversion from the traditional foster care system. Plans are developed for biological parents to work towards reunification.

Prevention & Education Classes
Family Outreach center offers a variety of classes to assist individuals and families with parenting and life skills.
