Family and Community Compact (Kinship Program)

An excellent opportunity exists for a professional with a bachelor's degree in social work (masters preferred) or related field who is committed to assisting high risk parents and extended family members in need of community-based support services.  The program works with the child protection and court systems to provide an alternative for biological parent(s) whose child(ren) has been removed due to substantiated child abuse or neglect.  The focus is to work with the parent to become rehabilitated so that reunification with their child(ren) might occur.  Children are placed with extended family and/or fictive kin for up to one year.  A host of services are provided to the caregiver and children to ensure that the placement is stable and all the needs of the family is addressed.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Collecting, compiling, and maintaining accurate emergency and other resource information for utilization in work with juveniles and their families.
  • Serving as a referral advocate for families needing technical assistance in accessing community resources key to healthy functioning.
  • Providing support and assistance with negotiations/meetings involving other community service programs when/where appropriate.
  • Maintaining and provide information/training in self-advocacy, rights, services for kinship families.
  • Conducting weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and/or quarterly home visits to the kinship families as directed.
  • Completing program assessment forms, progress notes, and monthly reports as required.
  • Collecting and compile information for monthly reports as requested by the Director of Child Welfare each month.
  • Providing or arrange for limited transportation for families where appropriate.

Drug and Alcohol Assessor


Experience:

Two to Five years experience in conducting drug and alcohol assessments. The successful candidate should be experienced in working with underserved populations diagnosing and treating mental health and substance using disorders.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to work independently with good organizational, time management and written and verbal communication skill is required. Training and/or experience in working with low income and people of color is desired. The assessments will be conducted in the homes of the individuals being referred by the Department of Human Services Children's Protective Services Division and child welfare workers. The successful candidate should be able to complete the drug and alcohol assessment from the home. Knowledge of the local resources associated with treating mental health and substance using individuals is necessary.

Compensation:

Payment is on a fee for service basis at a rate of $30.00 per hour. Each assessment is scheduled for a two block of time and producing a report is reimbursed at $15.00 per report. Mileage is also paid. This position has no other benefits.

Full-Time And Part-Time Opportunities
 
Community Liaison – Full-Time

 

Excellent opportunity for a professional with a bachelor’s degree in social work or related field who is committed to assisting agency clients in accessing community resources i.e., Department of Human Services, Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Network 180, Friend of the Court, Urban League, local pantries, YWCA, clinics, etc.
The successful candidate will also:
  • Serve as an advocate for agency clients in meetings and negotiations with community resources, as needed (i.e., landlords, housing, utilities, etc.)
  • Serve as liaison between agency clients and emergency needs/service programs throughout the city and/or county (i.e. Legal Aid, Police Department, etc.)
  • Represent agency at community resource fairs and act as United Way campaign liaison
  • Collect, compile, and maintain accurate emergency service information for clients in need
  • Facilitate the pre-approved procurement and/or purchase of client and/or agency related goods and supplies
  • Maintain and provide information to clients in becoming self-sufficient and proactive in decision-making
  • Assist probationers and parolees re-entering the community

Jail Mental Health Therapist (Part-Time Opening)

Credentials/Experience:

LLMSW or LMSW licensed in the State of Michigan preferred to work in the Kent County Correctional Facility. Experience working with the incarcerated and underserved populations is desired.

Knowledge and Abilities:

The candidate will be computer literate with excellent assessment skills and a strong working knowledge of the DSM IV. Working independently as a member of a treatment team in a fast paced environment is necessary. The position is second shift working from 3 - 11pm. Occasional week-end coverage is required.

Outpatient Therapist (Part-Time Openings)

Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Abuse program requires a Master's in Social Work plus licensure in the State of Michigan (LMSW). The program has successfully integrated its mental health and substance abuse outpatient services into a single program that has a strong emphasis on serving low income and people of color with co-occurring disorders. Children, Adolescents, Adults and their respective families are the focus in a person/family centered approach to addressing the wide range of issues that impact both individuals and family functioning.

Services will be provided through several new outreach sites that include schools in the greater Grand Rapids area as well as other social service organizations where out targeted populations are served.

Responsibilities Include: 1) Assessing mental health and substance use disorders using the DSM IV diagnostic code; 2) Developing and implementing clinical interventions appropriate to the identified needs of the client population; 3) recognizing the need for psychiatric services i.e. assessment for the use of psychotropic medication and making referrals for in-house services; 4) Making referrals for other supportive services (group); 5) Ability to work independently (60) active clients; 6) Timely completion of all Clinical reports; and 7) Working as a member of the team. Demonstrated knowledge of mental health and substance abuse disorders across the age and gender spectrum is a must as well as experience in working with the service population.

Bi-lingual Spanish/English preferred.
